Of her chapbook, The Root from which Freedom Blossoms, Sara Santistevan says, “I sought to explore Latinidad by drawing from mythologies, histories, familial anecdotes, and personal experiences. I chose to filter each of these lenses through the first person voice. My goal in doing so was to examine how conflict caused by complicated histories and cultural norms, especially as they evolve as a result of assimilation, can live on in the internal lives of minorities.”
